Children

The easiest way is to start young. Limit dramatically sweets, fizzy drinks and squashes. A child will not miss what they have never had. Obviously as they get older it becomes harder as they are more influenced by their friends and media. Don’t give them sugary cereals or add sugar to drinks or food. Check that any medicines are sugar free. (see section on diet below)

A child below 3 should just be offered milk or water to drink.

Be sensible - children can go to parties and enjoy the sweets or have the occasional sugary drink but this should not be the norm.

Older children should be educated about good foods and bad foods that they should limit. Chidren as young as 4 can understand this and schools and pre schools incorporate it as part of their curriculum.

Lead by example.

Fluoride supplements

Many areas of the country have fluoridated water. Fluoride works by becoming incorporated into enamel strengthening it. Fluoride is also in toothpaste. Too much fluoride can be harmful so make sure that only a pea-sized amount of toothpaste is used. Children’s toothpaste should be used for children under 6. Some cheaper brands of toothpaste contain sugar-check it out.

Brushing –for your child

A good quality toothbrush the correct size for your child’s age is important. Up until the age of 7 a child will need their teeth brushing for them. Obviously you can teach your child how to do it but they will still need your help. Most children are happy to have their teeth cleaned but your dentist will be able to come up with suggestions if it is a problem.

Some ideas to make it fun

Novelty brushes but make sure they are of a good quality.

Clean them whilst in the bath.

You sing a song whilst brushing and try and get them to aahh the tune at the same time as brushing their teeth.

Small children like being cocooned in a warm towel which also keeps their arms out of the way.

Don’t get stressed if you miss one day- it is better to remain calm and not respond to tantrums.

With toddlers try different times of the day as well.

Encourage them to clean their toys teeth-with an old toothbrush. Or even your teeth if you are feeling brave!!!

Disclosing tablets for older children-these dye food and plaque red and the child then has to brush to remove it. This can be done initially without a mirror to see how good they are.

Tooth brushing should be 2 x day.

First visit to the dentist

Ideally just take them at about 12 months with the minimum of fuss. This will then become normal.
Older children can look at books about visits to the dentist.

Avoid words like pain, hurt, sit still etc. The child will not have thought about this scenario at a young age.
Lead by positive example. If you are unable because of your own anxieties try and arrange for someone else to come along too.
